Imagining, Creating,
Learning, Exploring
A powerful community anchor
and cultural force.
Explore delivers transformative artistic experiences
that enrich York’s cultural life, strengthen the local
arts ecology, and encourage community engagement
through inclusive and accessible creative expression.
We collaborate with both local and national
arts organisations to bring high-quality cultural
experiences into our welcoming spaces, ensuring
broad community reach and impact. As a National
Portfolio Organisation (NPO) supported by Arts
Council England, Explore is recognised for its vital
cultural contribution. Our annual NPO programme
centres on a specific York community, fostering
creativity through dynamic collaborations with
professional artists and creatives. These projects are
inspired by the nationally significant Explore York
Archives collections and aim to spark imagination
and unlock the creative
potential of individuals
and communities alike.
Baroque around the Books
Young baroque duo Intesa* musicians Lucine Musaelian and
Nathan Giorgetti – went on a mini tour
of four Explore libraries just before
Christmas. The tour gave people in
York a unique opportunity to stumble
upon early music with these two
talented young performers.
*Intesa is an Italian
word meaning
understanding, or a
meeting of minds.
The project was the
result of a partnership
between the National
Centre for Early Music and Explore
York Libraries and Archives.
“It was wonderful,
it felt like it was a
gift to York. Thank
you so much - these
are difficult times
for many of us. This
really felt so positive
and generous.”
