Wellbeing through
Libraries and Archives
Our libraries are a vital lifeline across York. They offer a trusted
network of safe, welcoming, non-clinical spaces where anyone can
access expert advice, reliable information, and supportive resources
to improve their health and wellbeing.
Creative Cafés
Part of the
NPO Programme
Monday mornings were
anything but ordinary at
Acomb Explore in autumn
2024. Over six weeks, local residents gathered
to explore their community’s history through
Explore York’s archives - transforming
memories and discoveries into vibrant
artworks.
Guided by artists Izzy Williamson and Gracie
Richmond, participants experimented with
mono printing, collage, writing, and more.
Inspired by a WWI postcard from Acomb
soldier Sidney John Holmes, they reflected
on tradition, change, and what Acomb means
to them today. More than an art project, the
Creative Café became a warm, welcoming
space to connect, express, and grow. As one
participant put it, “The sessions feel like a
warm hug.”
Reading Well
“The library is as important to the
village as the doctors and pharmacy”
Reading Well collections help people
understand and manage their health and
wellbeing. The books are recommended
by health experts, people with lived
experience, relatives and carers. A new
set of titles dealing with dementia was
launched this year.
Partners who brought expert advice and information to Explore Centres and Libraries across
York this year included: Healthwatch, York Mind Teen Chit Chat Cafes, City of York Council
Health Trainers, York Mental Health Hub and York Bereavement Alliance.
